Mindless vandalism at Acres Lake, Drumshanbo

The Leitrim Observer has been notified that a life buoy at Acres Lake, Drumshanbo was vandalised over the weekend. The life saving device was cut from the pole and thrown into the freezing lake.

Water Safety Ireland have a reporting system on their website, so the public can inform them of any damaged or missing life buoys. In 2021, 81 people died by drowning in Ireland. According to Water Safety Ireland 62% of all drownings happen inland on our rivers or lakes.

Elsewhere, a new pilot scheme is being tested in some counties that will see smart devices installed by rivers, canals and beaches alerting local authorities when ring buoys have been stolen or vandalised.
It costs approx €2,000  to replace a lifebuoy.  The replacement of this life buoy falls under the remit of Waterways Ireland.
People are also advised to be very careful and stay off rivers and lakes during icy weather.
