Planning permission approved for North West Hospice extension

The North West Hospice Charity and the HSE have confirmed Planning permission approval has been given for an extension to the current North West Hospice facility in Sligo.

The new build will comprise of an extension to the current building 12-bed unit (12 single rooms) as well as outpatient facilities. The existing in-Patient Unit will be refurbished to house the Palliative Care teams. 

The current Hospice in-patient unit consists of eight beds, three single rooms and a five-bedded ward.  The North West Hospice and the HSE note the current facility was never purpose-built, and single rooms are vital for the dignity and privacy of patients and their families. An increase in demand for services over the last few years means that there simply are not enough beds, particularly over the winter months.

Patients will have access to their own bedrooms in this new state-of-the-art build which will increase their dignity and privacy and benefit their families also.  The project is now out to tender for a construction partner. Once this stage is complete it is envisioned that the sod will be turned in 2023.
