Cllr Sean McGowan revealed at the latest meeting of County Leitrim Joint Policing Committee meeting that a young woman was out "walking with her child in a buggy on a local road and a car pulled up and tried to encourage her to get into the car with him. She kept walking and he kept following her and luckily enough when she took out her phone, he took off."The incident took place in the Dromod area and the car was reportedly a black BMW.Cllr McGowan said he was highlighting the incident to "warn people, particularly ladies, to walk in pairs and have someone with them and always have their phone with them. It was scary for the woman involved and her family. Thankfully nothing happened but I believe a similar incident happened on the same stretch of road," he said.Inspector Carla Curry said there is an active investigation currently ongoing in relation to the incident and said that it was flagged on the Garda Facebook page.
"We can put another piece on the crime prevention piece on our Facebook page. It's down to personal safety and sometimes you think you can go out on a walk and don't foresee something like this happening. We want people to have their mobile phones with them so they can contact somebody," she said. She added the Gardaí also rolled out a programme in primary schools across the district highlighting what to do if a child should be approached and advice on 'stranger danger.'
