Leitrim’s only animal shelter, Leitrim Animal Welfare, will soon be recruiting new volunteers to join their busy and hands-on working environment in the coming month or so.

The shelter is seeking “committed and compassionate” individuals and has outlined several responsibilities and expectations for those interested in joining the much-loved organisation.

Volunteer roles at the centre include dog walking, socialising with animals, providing basic training and enrichment, general organising, and spending time with the cats in the cattery.

Leitrim Animal Welfare is looking for volunteers with a good level of physical fitness, as the work can be strenuous and very hands-on.

Applicants should be able to take instruction, follow safety guidelines, be reliable and consistent with their availability, and work well both independently and as part of a team.

Located in the rural area of Drumkeeran, the shelter advises that volunteers must have their own transportation due to its remote setting.

Volunteer hours are from 9am to 12pm on weekdays and/or weekends, with a regular commitment to set days required.

There is a particular need for weekday volunteers, as weekend slots tend to fill up quickly.

Those interested in applying to volunteer can email leitrimanimalwelfare@gmail.com.

The centre has had an especially busy year, with over 75 dogs arriving at their gates.

It also runs an active Trap, Neuter, and Release Programme, which aims to reduce animal suffering by tackling the root causes of homelessness and overpopulation in the region.

For nearly 30 years, the centre has remained committed to improving the lives of all animals in Leitrim who come through its doors.
