A Status Yellow weather warning for snow and ice lifted at 11am this morning, but school closures remain in place across parts of Leitrim.
Overnight conditions brought spells of rain that later turned to frost and ice on many local and regional roads, resulting in black ice and treacherous driving conditions, even on treated routes.
Schools closed today, Tuesday, January 6, in Leitrim include Carrigallen Vocational School, Lough Allen College, Drumshanbo Vocational School, St Brigid’s National School and St Michael’s National School.
“Please exercise extreme caution on the roads around the county this morning. All roads, including treated roads, are extremely dangerous following overnight weather conditions. Only travel this morning if necessary. Motorists are urged to reduce speed and increase distance between vehicles,” Leitrim County Council said in a statement on Facebook.
Weather conditions are expected to remain cold, although the weather warning has been lifted everywhere except Northern Ireland.

While temperatures will be less cold than recent nights, frost is still possible in some areas, with lowest temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees and mostly moderate westerly winds.
