"We can't control how some people drive if they want to be reckless" - Bohan

Cllr Mary Bohan

Cllr Mary Bohan proposed that a speed ramp be provided at St Brigid’s National School in Drumkeeran in the interest of child safety.

She continued that while she had been advised that people should not drive at speed at this location, "we can't control how some people drive if they want to be reckless and drive too fast."

She said a number of parents have contacted her in relation to the issue and asked if anything could be done to slow traffic at the location.
"You'd be surprised how certain people can build up their speed; it's quite dangerous there because you have cars and buses dropping and many children walking to school and parents may be walking with them. If we could just do something to slow the traffic down it would be helpful."

The official response stated that this location will be assessed for consideration in the current list of low cost safety proposals.

Cllr Padraig Fallon supported the motion and said he observed a car driving up to the school and "it turned and came back down so Google Maps must be still sending traffic out that  way and I've noticed that on numerous occasions."

He added that he didn't know what the solution was "but there certainly needs to be rumble strips or an amber warning light or something like that for example road markings warning people they are coming up to a school."
