The Leitrim Glens Sportive is set to return over the August Bank Holiday weekend, kicking off once again in Manorhamilton.

This popular event draws cyclists from across the country to take on the scenic routes through the Glens of Leitrim, all in support of charity.

This year’s event will start and finish at the W8 Centre in Manorhamilton on August 3, offering four routes designed to suit a range of abilities: a 40km route, a 100km route, a 200km route, and a 250km route.

In the lead-up to the event, safety concerns about certain sections of the course were raised at a recent meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District.

Cllr Eddie Mitchell stated that “minor repairs would contribute enormously to cyclist safety,” highlighting two specific problem areas.

He noted that part of the route climbs through Killea, where the road near the water reservoir is in poor condition.

He also pointed out a hazardous deep ridge on the R280 towards Kinlough, approximately 300 metres past the Ballintrillick turn.

In response, the Council confirmed that localised repairs will be identified and completed ahead of the event.

Cllr Mitchell’s motion was seconded by Cllr Gilmartin, who described the Leitrim Glens Sportive as a “wonderful event” and praised it as a valuable addition to north Leitrim during this time of year.
