Leitrim care centre improves HIQA compliance following follow-up inspection

HIQA inspector found Saol Beo in Manorhamilton had improved governance, safeguarding and documentation since its last inspection.
A follow-up inspection of a Leitrim nursing home found improvements; however, additional work relating to risk management and overall governance and management would further improve compliance levels at the centre after the initial inspection found it non-compliant in three regulations, according to the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) report published in December.
HIQA published a report on July 24 following its unannounced inspection of Saol Beo in Manorhamilton, a full-time residential service run by Positive Futures.
The inspection took place on March 20 this year. The report stated that the inspector met and spent time with all three residents at the centre and found improvements in the capacity and capability of the registered provider and the person in charge to govern the service.
The improvements included incidents being recorded in line with the provider’s policy, updates to several policies that addressed gaps identified during previous inspections, improved documentation systems, and audits being completed in line with the provider’s schedule and regulatory requirements.
Some safeguarding risks remained at the centre, linked to interpersonal compatibility issues and the size of the premises. However, the inspector was satisfied with the provider’s capacity to ensure that matters arising were addressed in line with local and national safeguarding requirements. The safeguarding policy was up to date, and staff had received training in safeguarding and protection.
The centre was inspected across seven regulations and, of the seven, received no non-compliances compared with three during the previous inspection.
The regulations inspected were governance and management, notification of incidents, written policies and procedures, premises, risk management procedures, protection, and residents’ rights.
The centre was found to be substantially compliant in governance and management and risk management procedures, and compliant in notification of incidents, written policies and procedures, premises, protection, and residents’ rights.
