Leitrim Association of People with Disabilities has received numerous complaints about motorists parking in designated bays without a valid permit.

People who park in disabled parking bays without having a disability were described as doing one of the “most despicable” things anyone could do at a recent meeting of Leitrim County Council.

Cllr Ita Reynolds-Flynn put forward a motion calling on Leitrim County Council to recognise the ongoing concerns raised by people with disabilities about the inappropriate and unlawful use of designated disabled parking bays by individuals who do not hold a valid disabled persons parking permit.

“The misuse of these spaces causes significant inconvenience, distress and exclusion for people who rely on them,” her motion stated.

Cllr Reynolds-Flynn, who is Chairperson of Leitrim Association of People with Disabilities, said the association had received numerous calls and complaints about the issue and stressed the need for an awareness campaign.

The motion received widespread support from fellow councillors, with Cllr Brendan Barry also raising concerns about people parking on footpaths, blocking access for wheelchair users and those pushing buggies.

“It’s one of the most despicable things for anyone to do to park in a disabled space if you’re not disabled,” commented Cllr Mary Bohan.

An official response from the council stated that, “It is an offence under the Road Traffic Act 1994 for anyone to park in a disabled parking bay without displaying a valid permit.

“Leitrim County Council have community wardens who will issue parking fines (up to €150 for people who abuse or misuse these designated parking areas.”

Cllr Paddy O’Rourke suggested that, “Some sort of public humiliation rather than a cash punishment might be more effective.”
