Mohill Historical Society will host the event on New Year's Day

Leitrim historical society to host a nostalgic 'Down with Jazz' Celebration

The Mohill Historical Society is kicking off 2025 with a vibrant and unique event that combines history, music, and community spirit.

On New Year’s Day, the town of Mohill will come alive with a recreation of the iconic anti-jazz protests led by Fr. Peter Conefrey more than 91 years ago.

Fr. Peter Conefrey, a parish priest from Cloone, was a prominent figure in the anti-jazz movement of the 1930s. While his opposition to jazz music reflected his concerns about moral decay, Conefrey was also deeply committed to preserving Irish traditions and cultural identity.

His belief in the enduring value of Irish customs and heritage has withstood the test of time, serving as a testament to his dedication to safeguarding Ireland’s rich cultural roots. In 1934, he voiced strong opposition to the growing popularity of jazz music, which he saw as a threat to traditional Irish values and morality.

His fiery speeches and writings reflected concerns about the perceived moral decay associated with jazz, as it was often linked to modernism and foreign influences. Conefrey’s efforts became emblematic of a broader cultural resistance in rural Ireland during a time of significant societal change.

The festivities will begin at 12:30 PM at Station Road, Mohill (weather permitting) where participants are invited to dress in their best 1920s and 1930s attire. The historical society encourages attendees to bring creative banners and slogans that echo the themes of the era, celebrating the fascinating history behind the original “Down with Jazz” movement. The group will march through the town, evoking the energy and sentiment of the time while celebrating the music and culture of the past.

Following the parade, the event will shift to the Mohill Canon Donoghue Hall from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM for an afternoon of music and merriment. Ciaran Wilde (Dublin City Jazz Orchestr) Friends Jazz Band, led by the renowned saxophonist and jazz maestro Ciaran Wilde, will provide lively tunes to get everyone dancing, blending the era’s nostalgic charm with contemporary vibrancy.

A special highlight of the day will be a performance by Tommy Keyes & Friends, featuring the acclaimed singer-songwriter and passionate advocate for Irish music, who will debut their latest piece, "Down with Jazz & Paganism Too."

To end the celebration on a delightful note, attendees will enjoy traditional Irish boxty from the famous Gallaghers Boxty house and tea, adding a homely touch to the day’s events.

Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and the most imaginative “Down with Jazz” banners, so participants are encouraged to showcase their creativity and flair for vintage fashion. Tickets for the event will be available at the door for just €10 per person (cash only), with free entry for children under 12.

The organisers say this is an unmissable opportunity to step back in time, embrace local history, and enjoy a day of music and community connection. Make sure to mark your calendar for this wonderful celebration of Mohill’s rich cultural heritage and the spirit of the jazz age.

The historical society thanked their  supporters: Leitrim County Council, the local community, and Gallaghers Boxty House.
