Permission has been granted for an accessible toilet extension to the former narrow-gauge railway building at Mohill Railway Station, which is currently under refurbishment. The extension will connect to existing services as part of broader restoration efforts.

The Old Mohill Station House, which closed in 1959, is being redeveloped by Mohill Town Team.

In 2012, a group of visionary local trustees secured the building, recognising its historical significance and striving to preserve it for future generations.

They successfully raised the necessary funds to purchase the property, with generous financial contributions from the local community.

The Old Mohill Station House was a key part of the Cavan and Leitrim narrow-gauge railway, which operated for over a century.

It first opened in October 1887, initially for goods transport, and began passenger services a week later.

The station remained a vital transport hub until its closure on April 1, 1959.

Mohill Town Team envisions transforming the building into a vibrant community, heritage and tourism space, a must-visit destination for both locals and visitors.

Leitrim County Council granted permission for the accessible toilet extension with three conditions, including competent site supervision, project management works must be carried out by qualified professionals experienced in conservation works.

In 2022, the Department of Rural and Community Development awarded a grant of €500,000 for the refurbishment of the building. An additional €50,000 was granted on March 16 this year.

However, the local community must contribute 10 percent of the project costs. Donations can be made online here
