A ‘narrow and dangerous’ footpath starting at Mohill’s old vocational school cannot be widened without the Council purchasing part of private gardens.

A problematic footpath in Mohill cannot be widened without the Council purchasing land, a meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District has heard.

Cllr Paddy Farrell put forward a motion calling on the District Engineer to investigate and upgrade the footpath on the Cloone Road in Mohill, from the old vocational school. He described the footpath as “very dangerous and narrow,” particularly for people with buggies or mobility scooters, who are forced onto the busy main road where the path becomes very narrow.

Cllr Farrell told the meeting that the footpath needs to be made “a lot safer” and that improvements should be made a priority.

District Engineer Emma Donohoe explained that the road does not allow for the footpath to be widened without encroaching on private property. She added that, to carry out the work properly, the footpath would need to be widened along its entire length down to the junction.

An official response from the Roads department stated: “Leitrim County Council have investigated this issue, unfortunately the physical width of the roadway will not allow a widening of the footpath. Any future widening will have land purchase of private gardens.”
