Leitrim reports zero road deaths in 2025

Road fatalities in Ireland have decreased by 19 percent so far this year, with Leitrim among nine counties that have recorded no deaths.

According to An Garda Síochána, 35 individuals have lost their lives on Irish roads as of March 19, compared to 46 fatalities during the same period last year.

This year's victims include nine pedestrians, 16 drivers, three passengers, five motorcyclists, and one cyclist.

Data published by the Irish Independent on March 17 shows that Leitrim, Longford, Clare, Waterford, Tipperary, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Monaghan have reported zero road deaths as of January 1, 2025.

In contrast, neighbouring Donegal has reported four fatalities since the start of the year, with approximately 75 percent of those involving individuals aged 25 or younger.

In 2024, a total of 174 people lost their lives in 160 road collisions.

The Irish Independent also noted that experts remain puzzled by last year’s 30 percent surge in road deaths during spring, which was followed by a decline throughout the summer and autumn.

In 2023, Leitrim County Council announced its goal to reduce road deaths by 50 percent by 2030 and down to zero by 2050.

An Garda Síochána continues to urge motorists to drive with caution, avoid using mobile phones while driving and take breaks if feeling fatigued.

A short nap of 15 to 20 minutes is recommended for tired drivers.
