Powering up! Two new EV charging points coming to Leitrim

Leitrim is set to receive two new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points as part of a national rollout of 53 high-power recharging hubs designed to support Ireland’s growing EV fleet.

In total, 175 new charging points will be installed nationwide across these 53 hubs.

The new charging stations in Leitrim will be located at Rooney’s Supervalu in Manorhamilton, and Rosebank Retail Park in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Leitrim has massively struggled with EV infrastructure over the years. According to a 2022 report from the Northern and Western Regional Assembly, the county ranked the lowest in Ireland for EV charging points.

More recently, an April report from the Irish Motor Industry revealed that Leitrim had the fewest EV registrations in the country, with only 22 electric vehicles recorded at the time.

High vehicle costs, limited charging infrastructure and range anxiety continue to be significant barriers for those considering a switch to electric in the county.

Welcoming the announcement made by Minister Darragh O’Brien, Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan said:

“It is vital for this region and constituency that we expand our EV charging network to facilitate EV owners who visit this region for either work or leisure purposes.

“I would like to see more of our smaller villages and towns get the funding to provide town centre fast charging EV points to ensure that more and more people have the opportunity to visit our locality including EV owners without the concern of range anxiety,” concluded Deputy Feighan.

Currently, Leitrim has 11 public EV charging stations. With the addition of the new points in Manorhamilton and Carrick-on-Shannon, the total will rise to 13.

The announcement is part of a wider plan to build a reliable recharging network across the country, with the distance between recharging hubs to be 60km or less.
