'Extend the hand of friendship' - Organisation promoting rights of refugees in Christmas appeal

The Chief Executive Officer of an asylum seeker rights group has released a hopeful Christmas message aimed at asylum seekers and refugees currently residing in Ireland.

John Lannon is the CEO of Doras, an independent, non-profit, non-governmental, human rights organisation which aims to promote and protect the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants since its establishment in 2000 by Ann Scully.

Its patron is the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins.

Mr Lannon said that Christmas time is 'an opportunity' for everyone in society to reflect on 'how we can bring love, hope and joy to others.'

However, he said that for asylum seekers and refugees, who have had to leave their families behind, it can be a particularly poignant time.

Mr Lannon elaborated: "They do not get to celebrate with their loved ones, and in many cases may be struggling to get by.

It’s heart-warming to see the many small acts of kindness being shown to asylum seekers throughout Ireland in the run-up to Christmas.

"Through our work, we know this is appreciated, but we also know that not being made to feel welcome is hurtful, and adds to the distress and trauma that asylum seekers have to contend with.

"So, at this Christmas time, there is an opportunity for communities through Ireland to extend the hand of friendship and welcome, and to do what they can to help asylum seekers feel safe."

Mr Lannon further said that, in the context of asylum seekers and refugees, while not everyone in Ireland is of the Christian faith, we can all enjoy Christmas.

He explained: "People of different faiths and religions respect it’s importance and will mark the holiday period in different ways.

"As Ireland becomes increasingly diverse, we have the opportunity to appreciate and celebrate other festivals such as Hanukkah, Diwali, and the festival of Eid at the end of Ramadan.

"Communities come together on these occasions, and in that regard Christmas is no exception," he concluded.
