On Sunday, October 8, supporters, concerned citizens and quiz lovers will convene at Gurn's Pub Manorhamilton for a fundraising quiz and draw for the Save Dough Mountain Group.

This group was formed when Coillte, in tandem with the ESB, set up a company called FuturEnergy, announcing their intention to develop a wind farm with the highest turbines in Europe, leading concerned locals to fund the group.

Their worries centre around the scale of the wind farm on a sensitive landscape of upland bog, which, by its nature, is very prone to landslides.

The devastation of similar landslides in Leitrim and surrounding counties is fresh in people's minds.

The biodiversity on Dough Mountain, just outside Manorhamilton, is wealthy and home to endangered species such as the Marsh Fritillary Butterfly, Irish Hare, Hen Harriers, and Pine Marten, as well as a vast array of flora.

The night and raising funds are also an opportunity to raise awareness about the campaign and project. John O'Hagan, Chair of the group, said, "Our members are very aware of the need to transition to sustainable forms of generating energy that will benefit the environment and communities.

"But the current trajectory we are on cannot deliver on any of this as it favours profit and big business over all else.

"Outdated guidelines, little to no meaningful community engagement and further pressure on biodiversity from these developments in unsuitable locations. Companies making money, while further contributing to the climate and biodiversity chaos," he added.

There are fantastic prizes for the winning team and wonderful prizes in the draw. People are welcome to come as a team, or individuals can come, and teams can be organised on the night.

The organisers would like to thank the following businesses and individuals that are supporting the event: Futurecast Manorhamilton, Osta Manorhamilton, Kiltyclogher Heritage Centre, Tawnylust Lodge, Five Glens Inn, Adventure Gently Canoeing, The Glens Centre, The Rainbow Ballroom, Caz Cards and Felim Gurn.

Registration for the event is taking place at 7.30pm on October 8 at Gurn's Pub Manorhamilton. Teams are four people, and the admission fee is €10/person.
