Declan Nerney is a household name in Irish country music, especially among the locals who’ve been following his career for decades. From his iconic hit The Marquee in Drumlish to his latest tracks, Declan’s music is a reflection of the people, places, and memories that define Irish life.
His songs, steeped in local history and culture, are more than just tunes—they’re storytelling at its finest. “Most of my songs are about the people around me, whether they’re sports stars or musicians,” he says. “I try to keep things true to life. It’s all about what’s real, not sentimental fluff.”
One of his biggest hits, The Marquee in Drumlish, captures the essence of an era. “That song is a bit of history wrapped up in just three minutes,” Declan explains. “It honors the great bands of the 60s and 70s, like Big Tom and Larry Cunningham, while also reflecting on my own childhood through the eyes of a young boy at the time.”
Declan’s style of Irish country is rooted in tradition, yet he’s always keenly aware of the genre's global journey. “Country music as we know it started in Europe with immigrants bringing their folk songs to America,” he explains. “But Irish country is still about our land, our people, and our own style of dancing. It’s different from American country, but the heart of it is the same.”
Though his focus is Irish country, Declan’s influences stretch across genres. “I grew up listening to rock and roll—The Beatles, Elvis, and even bands like The Crests,” he says. “I still love singing those old songs. But country music is where I’ve found my place.”
For Declan, performing is about more than just playing music—it’s about connecting with his audience. “When I step on stage, I imagine the crowd is in my living room,” he says. “It’s up to me to entertain them, make them forget their troubles, and give them a good night out. That’s the aim every time.”
Fans of all generations flock to Declan’s shows, and the upcoming performance at the Island Theatre in Ballinamore on Sunday, December 8th, 2024, promises to be another unforgettable night. The concert, part of his Where’s the Party nationwide tour, will kick off at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm. Tickets are priced at €25 (+ €2 booking fee), and with Declan’s vibrant live performances, it’s sure to be a night full of energy, nostalgia, and fun.
