Pictured are images of the disgraceful dumping of household waste and other materials along a busy local county road in Meelragh, Bornacoola, Co Leitrim.

Locals say there could be up on 50 bags of rubbish dumped on both sides of the road.

Local councillor, Sean McGowan said the location is “a busy local road so whoever carried out this dreadful act had to do it under the cover of darkness.

“I have reported this to the environment section of the Council, who I have no doubt will clean up the area and try and find some evidence of who the culprits might be.”

An angry Cllr McGowan stated, “The dumping of rubbish/ household waste is a terrible blight on our countryside and could I appeal to anyone who has any information about this type of behaviour to contact the environment section of the Council so they can follow up and take action against the perpetrators.

“The majority of people within the county dispose of their waste in a proper fashion,” he said and added he will be raising the problem again at the February meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District.
