John Naughten, a Fine Gael South Roscommon councillor passed away suddenly at his home on October 3.

Fine Gael TD for Sligo-Leitrim, Frank Feighan, a close colleague and friend of the late Naughten, has expressed his heartfelt sympathies.

Cllr Naughten was the brother of former Government minister Denis Naughten, and was selected to run in the Roscommon-Galway constituency in the upcoming general election.

He was a member of Roscommon County Council for over 20 years.

“I like so many others learned of the sad passing of John Naughten late on Friday evening.

“I was stunned when I got the call, his loss is felt far and wide, most especially by his wife Breda and daughters Emma, Leah and Orlaith,” Deputy Feighan said.

“John was a decent honourable person in every way, as a family man, a farmer, and a public representative for over 20 years, the people of the Athlone EA elected him on 5 consecutive occasions most recently in June last where he again topped the poll increasing his personal vote.

“As an Oireachtas member representing Roscommon for over 20 years, I found John to be good colleague and friend, personable and hardworking ensuring his community’s needs were always on the agenda of any developments for the county.

“If history were to take a different course, I firmly believe John Naughten would have succeeded in following in the footsteps of Dennis and his late father Liam in being elected to Dáil Eireann but alas that wasn’t to be and now we now must mourn this terrible loss.

“I extend my deepest sympathy to his wife Breda and his daughters and his extended family especially Dennis who I served with for so many years in Leinster House.

“Ar Dheis Dé go raibh an ainm dilís,” he concluded.

The funeral of John Naughten will take place on Thursday, October 10 in St Brigid’s Church, Drum.

The mass will be live streamed on YouTube, and a Book of Condolence has opened at Roscommon County Council.
