Be Fire Safe at School
This is a newly developed teacher led fire safety education resource for post primary students that is interesting, fun and enjoyable for both teacher and students. The new resource has been developed to place student wellbeing and personal safety at the centre of learning. The resource aims to ensure students learn the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to keep themselves and others from fire.
The learning experienced while participating in this programme will be of use to students in their everyday lives. It will enhance students’ wellbeing throughout their lives and empower students with the necessary skills to be responsible and safe citizens.
Our Transition Year students took part in the this programme last week with Mr Duffy and the local fire service. Thanks to everyone involved for including our students in this very important life skills initiative.
Basketball
Our U16 girls took on Sligo Grammar School in a basketball game on Monday. Our girls had a very impressive win with a score-line of 40 to 15 at the end of the fourth Quarter. Brilliant work rate from each and every one of the girls, they played together, with substitutes playing an integral part in their victory. Thanks to Ms McGovern for coaching the team, to the girls on the table for helping out and to John McGuinness for refereeing the game.
Maths Week
This week brought Maths Week. Our Maths department had lots of games and puzzles to keep up on our toes this week. First up; Guess the amount of money in the jar!
The week proceeded with maths activities round and about the school. Some First Years did a maths trail around the school, collecting data from the cars in the staff carpark with Ms McGovern. Ms Higgins also had a challenge on Tues, 17th Oct, at lunch time, students competed against each other to complete a maths challenge in a timed event. Congratulations to Emily Guckian, First Year, Irene Peter, Second Year and David Dcouth, Third Year, on winning the event in their year groups.
Comhairle na nÓG
The Garda Siochana Sligo/Leitrim Youth Awards for 2023 were presented in Landmark Hotel, Carrick on Shannon, on Sunday the 8th of October. The Group Award went to Comhairle na nÓg, which includes MCC student Brianna Faughnan, 6th Year.
Leitrim Comhairle na nÓg attended the Sligo/Leitrim Garda Community Awards as they had won the Group Award for their work with MPACT (Moving Parents And Children Together), an addiction service targeted towards children of families suffering with addiction, and they aim to take away the taboo of talking about addiction by connecting families in similar situations. They want to break the cycle.
Leitrim Comhairle na nÓg have been working with them for over a year now, in advising on how to best reach young people in need of the service, this included redesign of flyers and an introduction of QR codes, which can be placed in discreet placed like bathrooms. They've given them opportunities to directly reach young people via their AGMs and have advised them on how and who to contact within schools, youth services etc. This is a very long term project that Leitrim Comhairle na nÓg hope will make Leitrim better for the future.
Brianna Faughnan, Sixth Year, is currently chairperson of Leitrim Comhairle.
Around our School
We've had lots of interesting work going on in classes this week. Ms Shanley and the TY class were getting into the spirit of Halloween by carving pumpkins with some interesting and scary results. Ms McCorry was also busy in the kitchen this week, with First Years making pizza and Second Years making bruschetta and pasta salads. Ms Farrell also had a fun bake and awarded Chefs of the Week.
Mr Ross and Ms McHugh were putting the boys through their paces in ASD Gym class. And Ms McNamee Patel was engaging in kinetic learning using sand to make coastal landforms that with her Second Years.
Ms Fitzpatrick was keeping things topical this week by making sense of the budget with her Fifth Year Business class.
Football
Our Senior Boys were unlucky this week to lose 2-12 to 1-10 to Manorhamilton on Wednesday.
We were unlucky on a few goal chances. Daniel Beirne, 6th year, was our man of the match, with excellent kick outs and a penalty save! Hard luck to Mr Ward and the Senior boys team.
Dyslexia Awareness Month
Ms McGirl was marking Dyslexia Awareness Month in her English class with First Years this week. They created some beautiful posters and displayed them in their classroom to raise awareness about Dyslexia.
Garda Station Visit
Senior ASD class visit to Carrick Garda station on Thursday as part of their Living in a Community Priority Learning Unit. They were given a tour and even got to sample the equipment! I think the garda car was a hit! Thanks to Ms Murphy for organising.
Junior Cycle Results
Congratulations to our Junior Cycle students who received their results last Wednesday. Congratulations to their teachers who worked so hard with them over the last number of years to get them to this point in their educational career. Thanks to one and all.
