On Tuesday February 13, Sligo Traveller Support Group held a Pancake Tuesday fundraiser in support of suicide prevention and mental health charity North West STOP. Two hundred euro was raised on the day with the event being attended by members of the Traveller community, representatives from a range of organisations and elected representatives including Cllr Marie Casserly and TD Marian Harkin. North West STOP provide free counselling and a range of other mental health and suicide prevention supports across the region for anyone that is struggling or experiencing mental health difficulties or concerns.
Mental Health worker with Sligo Traveller Support Group Jamie Murphy highlighted the importance of organisations like North West STOP, “There is not a family or community in Ireland that has not been impacted by the issue of poor mental health and suicide. It is something which has touched people from all walks of life and it can have an absolutely devastating impact. It is important though that while we acknowledge the difficulties posed by poor mental health that we also emphasise the supports that are available for the people affected, their friends and families, and the many stories of recovery from difficult situations. North West STOP are a fantastic community organisation who provide support and are one of many across the country that do so. We in STSG would also encourage people who are experiencing any type of mental health difficulty, no matter how big or small it may feel, to reach out for support. That could be with your GP, a friend or loved one or an organisation like North West STOP, Samaritans or Pieta House. For members of the Traveller community we in STSG are also here to support you in whatever we that we can."
