Sinn Féin will host a convention tonight at the Sligo Park Hotel to select its candidates for the Sligo-Leitrim constituency in the next general election.
The party will be running two candidates. Martin Kenny TD is guaranteed to run again, while former MEP Chris MacManus and Sligo councillor Thomas Healy will be competing for the remaining spot.
Chris MacManus appears confident he will get his name on the ballot paper.
Speaking to the Sligo Champion, MacManus said: “The Sligo seat is being contested between myself and Cllr Thomas Healy, but I am very hopeful and positive that I will be selected by the membership.
“I have nearly 20 years’ experience as a councillor and nearly five years’ experience representing the Midlands-Northwest region in Brussels as a Member of the European Parliament.
“I think this gives me an ability to understand the issues locally, regionally and nationally.”
The convention will take place at 8pm tonight.
There are four seats up for grabs in the constituency.
Those selected to contest so far in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency are Cllr Edel McSharry (Fianna Fáil), Marian Harkin TD (Independent), Frank Feighan TD (Fine Gael), Cllr Nessa Cosgrove (Labour), Martin Kenny TD (Sinn Féin), Graham Monaghan (Aontú), and Michael Kelly (National Party).
