Leitrim’s International Protection Applicants join Sligo Rovers for Integration Match

Sligo Rovers will be hosting an integration football friendly between the Sligo Rovers Integration Team and An Garda Síochána on Monday, November 25.

The team will include players from the International Protection Applicant (IPA) community in Leitrim and Sligo.

The Sligo club have been hosting football sessions for the past number of months with these players as part of the Sligo Rovers Football and Social Responsibility (FSR) programme.

Many players have gone on to take up volunteering roles within the club as well as attending games.

The sessions were initially set up with the support of a number of organisations including Sligo Leader Partnership, Diversity Sligo and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to promote integration and inclusion within the football and wider community.

Launched this year, the initiative aims to create both playing and non-playing opportunities for individuals from minority and marginalised groups, fostering integration while promoting positive physical and mental health.

Sligo Rovers have been actively promoting inclusivity for foreign nationals arriving in the area. In May of this year, the team visited the Abbey Manor Hotel in Dromahair to present jerseys to children who had recently moved to the village and were staying at the hotel.

“The Sligo Rovers Football Integration programme has been a big success with lots of players from the IPA community taking part in weekly football sessions but also with many going on to become volunteers with the club," said Jamie Murphy, Sligo Rovers Football and Social Responsibility Officer.

“It embodies for us what being a community club is all about and we hope to see as many people as possible to watch the game.

“We would also like to acknowledge the support of Sligo County Council with this event," he added.

The game will begin at 1pm at the Sean Fallon Astro Showgrounds and all are welcome to attend.
