Sligo University Hospital has opened a new 26-bed Medical Offsite Ward comprising six four-bedrooms and two single ensuite rooms.
The ward is an extension of Sligo University Hospital located at St John’s Community Hospital.
The additional beds were part of the capital funding from the HSE 2024 Capital Plan, costing more than €2.5m for the design, build and equipping of the ward.
The Medical Offsite Ward is a specialised facility that will provide structured medical support to patients who meet the criteria for the ward and will continue to benefit from medical supervision and therapeutic support.
It is suitable for patients who would benefit from an additional few days under the care of hospital staff.
Frank Feighan, Fine Gael TD for Sligo-Leitrim, has welcomed the opening of the new ward.
“I am delighted for Grainne McCann, Hospital Manager and her team that this development is now open.
“It will hopefully ease the pressure on management and staff who have to face the daily pressure of an excess of bed demand over supply, allowing the hospital to expand their inpatient care in a new contemporary ward designed to provide compassionate care to support patients' medical needs and recovery during their inpatient stay,” suggested Deputy Feighan
“We must continue to monitor the progress of the ongoing developments around Sligo University Hospital to ensure the capital plan is on time and within budget so that the promised new beds and surgical block especially are delivered without any undue delays” concluded Deputy Feighan.
