Minister Marian Harkin has welcomed this week's announcement by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) of significant funding for national roads projects in Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

Under this allocation, Leitrim will receive €3.1 million and Sligo will receive €8.2 million for works on key national routes.

The funding includes €2.2 million for the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin, €1 million for the N17 Knock to Collooney, €1.5 million for the N16 from Lugatober to the county boundary, €1.5 million for the Carrick-on-Shannon Bypass and €800,000 for the N4 at Dromod.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Harkin said: “I am very pleased to see this significant level of investment for our national road network in Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal. There are very significant investments in national and non-national roads in county Donegal to cater for the vast network of roads in the county. These routes are vital arteries for our region — supporting local businesses, tourism, farming, and daily commuters. This funding will enhance safety, improve journey times, and ensure our infrastructure keeps pace with the needs of our communities.”

Minister Harkin noted that the projects along the N4, N16 and N17 are particularly important strategic corridors for the north-west, strengthening connectivity both within the region and to the rest of the country. In addition to the national roads funding, substantial allocations have also been confirmed for regional and local roads in both counties. Under the Restoration and Improvement Grant scheme, Sligo will receive €9.8 million and Leitrim €7.8 million. Furthermore, Discretionary Grants of €2.36 million for Sligo and €1.8 million for Leitrim have been allocated.

Minister Harkin added: “Investment in our regional and local road network is equally critical, particularly in rural counties such as Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal where communities rely heavily on road transport. The combined Restoration and Improvement and Discretionary funding will enable essential maintenance, strengthening and safety works across a wide range of routes.”
She also acknowledged the work of Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal County Councils in identifying priority projects and delivering improvements efficiently and effectively. “This is a strong and balanced package of funding for our region. I will continue to work to ensure that Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal receive the sustained investment necessary to support economic development and improve quality of life for all our communities.”
