Foot to the floor for St Mel’s Musical Society
As St Mel’s Musical Society make the final preparations before returning to stage the group held a formal launch for their 2023 production, Footloose.
“The launch night of our comeback show, Footloose, was held in Coffee House 45. It was an incredible success,” Chairperson of the Society, Karen Reilly, said.
Karen spoke of the building excitement as the opening night approaches: “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone for joining us on this exciting journey as we take to the stage after a four year break.”
Bringing a show of this scale to the stage is a massive team effort: “We would also like to express our immense appreciation to our sponsors, whose generous support makes it possible for St Mel's to bring an exciting live show to the Longford audience. In particular, we would like to thank our main partners, The Sin Bin, Coffee House 45, and Evolution Stage School, for their invaluable contributions,” the group chairperson said, “Thanks to our talented cast, crew and committee and to everyone who came out and enjoyed the evening.”
Footloose is the story of Ren McCormack, a teenage boy from Chicago. He and his mother move to the small town of Bomont. Upon arriving, Ren finds himself at odds with most of the town, including the Reverend Bomont. The Reverend has convinced the town to outlaw dancing, which Ren finds unbelievable.
With the help of Ariel, the Reverend’s daughter, and Willard, Ren convinces the Reverend to let the teenagers dance, and in the process helps the town to heal from a tragedy that affected them all.
Footloose celebrates the exhilaration of youth, the wisdom of listening to one another, and the power of forgiveness.
It includes iconic 80's songs, 'Let's hear it for the boy', 'Holding out for a Hero' and of course the unforgettable title Track 'Footloose'.
This year's St Mel's Musical Society core team introduces new talent. Niamh O’Brien takes up the role of choreographer. Director Alan Greaney is no stranger to the stage and is a well known singer and performer. While this year's Musical Director is the remarkable Vince Tully.
Karen says the crew can't wait to get on stage: “We look forward to welcoming the people of Longford back to enjoy an outstanding live performance in the heart of the town, at St Mel's College Sports Hall.”
The show runs from Tuesday, April 11 to Saturday, April 15. Curtain at 8pm nightly, with a matinee show on Saturday, April 15 at 2pm. Tickets are available at the box office - Call 0899730175
