Leitrim GAA clubs have been urged to apply for funding to improve spectator facilities under the 2023 Clar programme particularly with regard to the upgrading of facilities to accommodate people with disabilities.
Minister for Rural & Community Affairs Heather Humphreys TD announced almost €8 million in funding for community and sports facilities with upgrades to spectator stands at local GAA and sports clubs to be funded for the first time.
Leitrim GAA Safety & Facilities Officer Gerry McGovern is urging clubs to avail of this opportunity to fund the upgrade of facilities at their grounds and in Particular for the development of Facilities for People with Disabilities.
“When we launched our report on Facilities for People with Disabilities at our Leitrim GAA grounds, it became apparent the some of our Club grounds were in need of an upgrade in relation to disability facilities. We were also aware that most clubs were not in a financial position to fund such development upgrades.
“I forwarded the report to Minister Humphreys and pointed out that the GAA Club is one of the most active organisations in every community and that it would be most beneficial if GAA Clubs could be funded directly from the office of Community and Rural affairs.
“It is a long held belief of mine the funding from this department should be made available directly to GAA Clubs so I welcome this announcement and I urge all our Leitrim clubs to use our report which outlines the areas in which development upgrade is needed to ensure we are a fully inclusive organisation and that our facilities are fully compliant with legislation and are there to be enjoyed by everybody.”
