Mohill Mavericks Ladies produced another dominant display as they made it four wins out of four at Castlerea Sports Complex last Sunday to go top of the Lonleitros League.
With Sligo All Stars in second place, the destination of the title could come down to the home and away meetings between the teams with the Mavericks in flying form at the moment, once again making light of absent players to score an easy win over Castlerea.
A confident Mavericks never looked like losing with the classy McGuinness sisters - Caoimhe and Odharnaith - in sparkling form with Caoimhe top scoring with 29 points while Odharnaith adding a further 20 which would have been enough to get past Castlerea on its own.
Two quick baskets from Odharnaith McGuinness opened the first quarter as she drove hard at the Castlerea defence. Two long range efforts from the home side tied the scores before Jasmine Reynolds hit two well taken scores to restore the Mohill lead.
The Mavericks, even at this early stage, were extremely focused and played tough defence to restrict the Roscommon side Castlerea to long shots. Another raft of baskets from Reynolds and Kate McGuinness left the Mavericks leading 28-13 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, a rejuvenated Castlerea fought their way back into the game as they outscored Mohill 15-13 but in the third quarter, Mavericks took off again with some great defensive work by Lorraine Butler & Chloe Dolan and great long range shooting by Ellen & Caoimhe McGuinness.
Mavericks were aggressive offensively with Jasmine Reynolds & Caoimhe McGuinness scoring some nice baskets after attacking the Castlerea boards as the visitors extended their lead by outsourcing their hosts 24-8 in this period.
Mavericks ran the bench in the final quarter as all players got more game time. Again there was no panic with a raft of players spreading the scores with Lorraine Butler, Erica Fortune & Katie McGuinness hitting the target.
The Mavericks have certainly established themselves as a team to fear this year with the range of players available.
Team & Scorers: Jasmine Reynolds 10, Caoimhe McGuinness 29, Odharnaith McGuinness 20, Erica Fortune 2, Lorraine Butler 2, Kate McGuinness 10, Ellen McGuinness 6, Chloe Dolan 2
