The north west is experiencing bitterly cold and freezing conditions as the week progresses, resulting in further school closures.
Many schools in Leitrim have opted to close today, January 9, in the interest of safety amid the icy weather.
Among the closed post-primary schools are St Clare’s Comprehensive, Manorhamilton; Lough Allen College, Drumkeerin; Drumshanbo Vocational School; Ballinamore Community School; Carrigallen Vocational School; Mohill Community College; Gaelscoil Liatroma; and Carrick-on-Shannon Community School.
Primary school closures include Four Masters NS, Kinlough; Masterson NS, Manorhamilton; Drumlease NS, Dromhair; St Joseph’s NS, Killenummery; and Drumkeerin NS.
All door-to-door Local Link transport services for passengers attending HSE services, as well as Local Link Demand Responsive (DRT) Services have been suspended for today.
Local Link Sligo-Leitrim-Donegal aims to resume full operations tomorrow, January 10.
All Irish Rail routes are operating with some experiencing delays.
The Status Orange weather warning issued by Met Éireann is due to lift at 11am today, though very cold weather conditions will continue before easing on Sunday.
A Status Yellow warning for low temperature and ice will remain in effect nationwide until 12pm on Friday, January 10
Motorists are being urged to exercise caution on roads due to black ice, and pedestrians are advised to take care on icy footpaths.
