Folk band Slow Moving Clouds to perform new album at The Dock

Featuring Kevin Murphy, Ultan O’Brien, and Aki, Slow Moving Clouds will perform their new album, Kolmas on Friday, June 9 at 8pm. The band brings their rich, atmospheric sounds to The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon presenting their unique blend of Irish and Nordic folk traditions.

Described by the Irish Examiner as having a 'feverish velocity', Kolmas weaves Finnish and Irish traditional textures with post-punk drones and contemporary classical shades. Its live performance will feature the Nordic instrument the Nycklelharpa, alongside the fiddle, viola, cello, and voice to create their distinctive and singular sound. Kolmas is Slow Moving Clouds’ most original work to date, pushing boundaries and providing a unique compliment to the current tide of alternative folk waves spreading across Ireland, the UK, and Europe.

The band’s previous records Os (2015) and Starfall (2018) established an international reputation for the band and led them to collaborate with bands such as The National, Bon Iver, and Jenny Lewis, Boys Noize, Gordi, Rusangano Family and Lisa O’Neill.

The band has also played support for Feist (Cork Opera House) and Ludovico Einaudi (3 Arena, Dublin).

Cellist, and vocalist, Kevin Murphy also appears in the Irish band Interference and his own cello-based instrumental project with Thomas Haugh, Seti The First. Kevin was a founding member of Dublin-based band Igloo in the late 1990s and has also worked with Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Andrew Phillpott (Depeche Mode and The Broad Bean Band), Nine Wassies from Bainne, Adrian Crowley, Valerie Francis and Norah Belle among others.

Fiddle player Ultan O’Brien is also known for playing in duos with Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin, Nic Gareiss, and Antoni Breschi, and as a member of Skipper’s Alley and John Francis Flynn. He also facilitates creative projects for children and young, mainly focusing on encouraging the exploration of sound, student-centered group composition, and collaborative engagement between students, teachers, and the wider school community.

Aki, the nyckelharpist and vocalist for the band is a Dublin-based musician, composer, and visual artist whose constant search for new sounds and musical ideas keeps him exploring and combining different music genres as well as developing new musical instruments. Aki has toured and performed his music in Europe, Russia, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and North America.

Admission is €18 with €16 concessionary price. Tickets are available at www.thedock.ie or at 071 965 0828.
