Glás na hAbhainn
Glás na hAbhainn estate in Attirory, Carrick-on-Shannon, will be taken in charge by Leitrim County Council in Summer 2025, Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District has heard.
At October’s meeting, Cllr Enda Stenson asked if Glás na hAbhainn is on any list to be taken in charge as Active Travel funds have been secured to complete footpaths and lighting.
Cllr Stenson also asked about the expected timeline for completing these works.
“It’s urgent, it’s a very dark, short area from Glás na hAbhainn up to the cross and it’s dangerous. There’s a lot of families in that area,” Cllr Stenson said.
Cllr Stenson’s motion was supported by Cllr McGowan and Cllr Guckian.
Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District was told that there is funding that has been approved in principle, to connect the housing estate entrance to the existing footpaths in Attirory, which lead into Carrick-on-Shannon.
However, there are land acquisition issues that need to be addressed first.
Once these issues are resolved, the scheme will progress to a consultation process, but the Active Travel scheme will go ahead regardless of the estate being taken in charge or not.
Leitrim County Council hopes to complete these processes by Summer of 2025.
A reply from Economic Development stated: “Once the outstanding matters are concluded with the Agent, the Council will engage in the required consultation with Uisce Éireann in respect of obtaining their agreement to take the estate and services in charge.
“When these consultations are concluded the Council will be in a position to commence the statutory public consultation process; which itself will take a minimum of 2 months.”
The Active Travel Scheme to complete footpaths is currently at the preliminary design stage.
