Leitrim to sparkle this Christmas with €50,000 funding boost

Local authorities have been granted funding to facilitate several promotional activities around Christmas.

Each local authority will receive €50,000. Leitrim County Council will use the funding to assist Christmas markets and Christmas lights schemes in seven key towns and villages across the county.

Donegal County Council has invited proposals from community-based groups in towns with a population of 5,000 or less, to support Christmas markets, Christmas lights and other types of Christmas events. It is intended that funding of €10,000 will be made available to at least one town in each of the five Municipal Districts.

Sligo County Council will use €20,000 towards an ice rink in the recently constructed Queen Maeve Square for the Christmas period.

In addition, proposals will be invited from up to six smaller towns and villages in the other two Municipal Districts, for the remainder of the allocation.

The announcement was made by Minister Alan Dillon who is at the department of Local Government.

The money is being allocated from the Local Government Fund (LGF), which was established in 1999 and is used to fund local authorities, primarily through Local Property Tax allocations.

Every year there is a separate allocation from the exchequer to fund a few projects and initiatives across the Local Government Sector.

Sligo-Leitrim Fine Gael TD, Frank Feighan has welcomed the funding.

“I want to thank Minister Dillon for providing this innovative funding which I hope will assist in bringing people into our local towns and villages over Christmas,” commented Deputy Feighan.
