The Cloonsarn Group Water Scheme (GWS) in Aughavas has been under a boil water notice for the last few years and has been an ongoing problem in the area.
Sinn Féin councillor Róisín Kenny requested that Ballinamore Municipal District engage with Irish Water to ensure that Cloonsarn Group Water Scheme (GWS) meets appropriate standards, making it safe for the hundreds of people who rely on it for drinking water.
The GWS have previously sought funding from Uisce Éireann.
A reply from the water services stated that the Rural Water Department met with the Cloonsarn GWS earlier in the year and discussed the taking in charge of the scheme by Uisce Éireann.
The reply further explained that the GWS have chosen to remain private. They have sought funding under the Multi Annual Rural Water Programme and Leitrim County Council are awaiting a decision on this funding request from the Department.
However, there is a possibility this funding may be awarded only if the GWS agree to be taken in charge.
The Council also sought emergency funding from the Department to allow the GWS to deal with any chlorine issues, but this funding was refused.
