Christine Coulson, founder of Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre, leaves lasting legacy

Christine Coulson, the founder of Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre has passed away.

Ms Coulson founded Leitrim Animal Welfare Trust in 1997, and it has since become a cornerstone of the Leitrim community. She worked hard to save and better the lives of animals for over 26 years.

Ms Coulson is remembered for her pivotal role in advancing animal welfare in Ireland, having established the first dog shelter with a no-kill policy.

Following this initiative, many other shelters in Ireland adopted a no-kill policy, leading to the nationwide decline in unnecessary euthanasia of dogs.

Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, reflecting on Ms Coulson’s remarkable achievements and lasting contributions to animal welfare.

“She had lived a life full of achievement, from spending her youth in America, where she worked in fast paced business environment whilst volunteering her time at Animal Shelters which contributed greatly to her knowledge of Animal Welfare and the operations of running her own.

“As well as caring for animals in need, Christine fostered and cared for many children in her time over a considerable amount of years.

“In 1997, Christine set up her own Animal Rescue called Leitrim Animal Welfare Trust,” a spokesperson said.

“During this time Christine made it her mission to change Animal Welfare.

“She continually lobbied and challenged the government to change the current standards of animal welfare and to provide Christine with the opportunity to operate Leitrim’s first dog pound, that encouraged neutering and rehoming methods instead of euthanising dogs that entered the pound system.”

On September 28, Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre won ‘Charity of the Year,’ by the Local Pet Awards, which Ms Coulson was “very proud of.”

“Christine called on St. Francis to help when nursing and caring for animals in need and now, we at Leitrim Animal Welfare have our own saint to call on in times of need,” the tribute continued.

“She was a strong, defiant and loving character who will be dearly missed and never forgotten.”

Rest in Peace Christine.
