Drumlease National School, Dromahair
The Manorhamilton Municipal District has addressed calls for improved traffic calming measures outside Drumlease National School in Dromahair, with the Council citing driver behaviour as the primary issue.
Highlighting the need for action, Cllr Eddie Mitchell urged the Council to re-evaluate the current traffic restrictions near the school.
“Despite the 50 kilometre per hour speed limit there is an ongoing issue with excessive vehicular speed at the pedestrian crossing outside the school,” Cllr Mitchell said.
“Further traffic calming measures may be needed to reduce speed on the road
either side of the pedestrian crossing."
A reply from the Roads department confirmed that no further works will be carried out by Leitrim County Council at this location, citing driver behaviour as the primary cause of concerns regarding this road.
The reply stated that Drumlease NS received funding in 2023 for works to be carried out under the Safe Route to School Program.
These works included an upgraded ramped pedestrian crossing, high friction surfacing and driver feedback signs, all of which aim to slow down traffic.
The reply further explained that Active Travel are currently funding the construction of a footpath from Churchfield housing estate to link up with the school and this has resulted in the carriageway being narrowed.
This change should see a reduction in traffic speed coming from the village as well as the creation of a safe pedestrian footpath.
“Leitrim County Council have carried out all design interventions from an engineering point of view, Unfortunately driver behaviour appears to be the issue here and is an enforcement issue," the reply concluded.
