McDonald’s hosted a Business Breakfast Panel Event at its Carrick-on-Shannon restaurant this week, attracting a full house of invited guests for a thought-provoking discussion on leadership, resilience, and the future of business in rural Ireland.
The event brought together industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and community figures to share insights on how businesses can thrive in smaller towns and contribute to local economies.
The event was moderated by businessman and broadcaster Bobby Kerr, with a panel of distinguished speakers offering valuable perspectives from their respective fields.
The panel featured Elaine Sterio, McDonald's Franchisee and Owner of the Carrick-on-Shannon Restaurant; Mel Harrison, McDonald’s Director of Franchising for Ireland and Northern Ireland; Charlene Tyrrell, Leitrim footballer, All-Ireland Intermediate Champion, and mental health advocate; and Pat J Rigney, Managing Director and Founder of The Shed Distillery.
The discussion focused on key issues facing rural businesses, including the challenges and opportunities for local enterprises, the importance of leadership and resilience, and the connection between sport, mental health, and entrepreneurship. Panelists shared their experiences and provided insights into how businesses can grow and succeed outside of major urban centers.
Following the event, Bobby Kerr highlighted the importance of the discussion, saying, “The panel’s conversation provided a valuable platform to engage with some of Ireland’s most influential business and community leaders, particularly those from the Leitrim region.

Since opening in Carrick-on-Shannon in 2023, McDonald's has made a significant impact on the local economy. According to research conducted by McDonald’s, the restaurant has contributed €3.6 million to the local Leitrim economy and supported 106 jobs in the county. This highlights the importance of businesses like McDonald’s in driving economic growth in rural areas.
Elaine Sterio, the Franchisee of McDonald’s Carrick-on-Shannon, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “This event was a fantastic opportunity to bring people together, share knowledge, and support the growth of local businesses.”
Additionally, McDonald's 2024 Social and Economic Impact Report revealed that the company supports 11,640 jobs across Ireland and contributed €414.6 million to the Irish economy in 2023, underscoring the company’s significant role in the Irish business landscape.
