Final preparations are in place for the 50th anniversary of the Seán MacDiarmada Commemoration in Kiltyclogher, with a number of events planned.
On Saturday, May 12, a Seán McDermott amateur boxing club (Manorhamilton) selection will face an Ulster ABA selection in the community centre, Kiltyclogher commencing at 8pm.
This has been an exceptional year for amateur boxing locally culminating with two youth boxers, Dearbhla Rooney from Glenade and Dean Clancy from Sligo, winning silver medals as finalists in the European Youth Amateur Boxing Championships in Italy just 2 weeks ago. Both Dearbhla and Dean hope to be in attendance on Saturday night.
On Sunday, May 13 at 12 noon, local people will lay a wreath at the monument to Comdt Phil Gilgunn at the New Line, Manorhamilton, followed by a reading of the proclamation.
At 2.30pm on Sunday, assembly will begin at Straduffy Cross, Kiltyclogher, for the march into Kiltyclogher commencing at 3pm. A flag party and two marching bands will lead the guests and marchers to the platform in the village. The main oration will be delivered by Mayo based Senator Rose Conway-Walsh who will talk on Brexit and Irish unity poll in addition to outlining the life and times of Seán MacDiarmada and honouring all who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom.
There will be a number of further platform based events, with light refreshments served in the Community Centre at the conclusion of formalities.
The organisers cannot guarantee good weather for the weekend but say they can guarantee every effort has been made to ensure an enjoyable and informative series of events for all the family.
