Concern about junction known as 'The Devil's Elbow'

Dangerous section of road needs double white lines says councillor

Concern about junction known as 'The Devil's Elbow'

Cllr Paddy Farrell called on District Engineer to investigage "dangerous junction"

Cllr Paddy Farrell called on District Engineer Darragh O’Boyle to investigate the "dangerous section of road on the R209 where vehicles come off the L3390 from Leitrim Village direction. There needs to be double white lines on the R209 or some other deterrent as there have been several incidents at this junction."

A report by the Roads office said they have installed driver feedback signs at both approaches to that junction, locally known as 'the Devil's Elbow', advising the traffic to slow to 60kph.  The existing centre line construction is in line with the current regulations.

Cllr Farrell said that drivers "nearly have to come out on the road" and there have been several incidents there and there should at least be a white lines on the road.

"It is a very dangerous junction. The road is very narrow and the speed limit there is outrageous," he said.

Cathaoirleach of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Enda Stenson supported the motion and suggested rumble strips be introduced. "It is a dangerous, dangerous junction," he agreed.

Mr O'Boyle said that recently, the council "constructed the very touristic and pleasant walkway between the village to Sheemore Walk which demanded a crossing of the R209 and, as part of that, we erected advisory driver feedback signs."

He said that he will review the signage at the location and also that he would contact the lining contractors to see if a white lines can be placed there.
