Keeldra Lake
Keeldra Lake, currently the only designated bathing water site in Leitrim, has been advised against for swimming due to risks posed by algae.
People are being advised not to swim in Keeldra Lake following the detection of increased algae levels in a bathing water sample collected on August 11.
Algae can contain harmful bacteria that may cause skin irritation and lead to infections or illness.
Additionally, a build up of algae can create slippery conditions and reduce water visibility, increasing the risk of injury.

Algae blooms are most common during late summer and early autumn, when conditions such as warm temperatures, sunlight, and nutrient-rich water combine to make rapid algae growth.
The warning against swimming in Keeldra Lake is expected to remain in place for approximately two weeks, until around September 5.
Leitrim County Council issued a statement online on August 22, advising people to avoid swimming at the popular lake.
The likely cause of the algae increase is high nutrient levels. Swimmers are advised to avoid swallowing or splashing water, to wash their hands before handling food, and to avoid swimming with open cuts or wounds.
