Famine Graveyard, Manorhamilton
Members of the Manorhamilton Municipal District have stated they will make “strong representation” to HSE Estates in establishing a memorial to honour the Cillín located within the Famine Graveyard in Manorhamilton.
A Cillín is a historical, unconsecrated burial site primarily used for the interment of unbaptised children, stillborn infants, and others who were not permitted burial in consecrated grounds.
Cllr James Gilmartin introduced the motion on behalf of all members of the Manorhamilton Municipal District.
“Recognising the Cillín with a respectful memorial is an important act of remembrance, offering dignity to those buried there and acknowledging past practices that impacted vulnerable individuals and families,” his motion read.

His motion also stated that a memorial would offer a space for reflection, education, and reconciliation, while honouring the memory of those laid to rest outside traditional burial practices.
“It’s very important to recognise these places. Their families have been carrying that grief quietly in times gone past and that bit of recognition gives reflection and education to the importance of these places,” Cllr Gilmartin added.
The motion received unanimous support, with other members expressing agreement.
“It’s a very worthy thing to do and we should make strong representation to the HSE,” said Cllr Bohan.

A Council response confirmed that the proposal would be a matter for HSE Estates to progress, and the Municipal District should write to the HSE accordingly.
All members agreed to write to the HSE and make strong representation to ensure this is realised, remembering an important and poignant part of history.
