Planning permission has been granted for the development of a new parish centre in South Leitrim.

A planning application was submitted to Leitrim County Council on March 3 of this year for the construction of a parish centre at Chapel Lane in Mohill, and permission was granted on August 20 with seven conditions attached.

The application, which was lodged by parish priest Fr Nigel Charles, details the construction of a single-storey parish centre containing a meeting room, a tea room, toilets and an administration office.

The development also includes alterations to the existing building, involving the change of use of part of the structure from a store to a plant room, boiler house and subdivided storage space.

Associated site works include service connections and the creation of a new entrance gateway onto Chapel Lane.

The development site lies contiguous to St. Patrick’s Church in Mohill, which is a protected structure.

The application was approved subject to seven conditions.

Among these conditions is a requirement that the developer liaise with the Active Travel Department of Leitrim County Council to ensure that kerbing, bollards and paving provided along the new footpath are consistent in finish with works proposed as part of the Safe Routes to School Programme.

It was further stated that the proposed vehicular entrance to the south of the parish centre onto Chapel Lane, as outlined in the original plans, will not be permitted.

The existing vehicular entrance serving the car park adjoining the junction of Chapel Lane and Convent Lane must be permanently closed as part of the development in conjunction with Leitrim County Council.

Another condition specifies that the proposed 1.8 metre high palisade fence will not be permitted.

Instead, a treated timber fence of similar height, planted to the rear with hedging, may be provided.
