Recent roadworks on the N16 between Sligo and Leitrim have seen a number of dangerous bends removed, though further improvements are hoped for to enhance the roads safety and functionality.

Cllr Felim Gurn proposed a motion at Manorhamilton Municipal District calling for communication between Sligo and Leitrim County Councils to secure additional funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to continue upgrades on the N16.

“The N16 on the Leitrim side of newly completed road work has been a great success in taking more bends out of Sligo, more work needs to be done on the Sligo side to the layby in Leitrim,” Cllr Gurn’s motion read.

“If you come back to the layby on the Leitrim side, it floods there and the road surface is so bad. It’s just to put the push on Leitrim County Council and Sligo County Council to talk and see where’s the next stage,” Cllr Gurn said.

“We want to know what the plan is in regards to if they’re taking more bends out, and we have to communicate,” he emphasised.

“It is an important connection from Sligo to Enniskillen and for people commuting in both jurisdictions.”

Cllr Fallon suggested inviting a member of the TII to meet with Manorhamilton MD to discuss future plans for the N16.

Cllr Gurn’s motion received widespread support from councillors.

“There’s been good work done but there’s definitely more space for work to be done to be beneficial to the area,” Cllr Gilmartin commented.
