Katie Kane battled through to the Connacht Handball Final which takes place next weekend in Collooney, Sligo overcoming stiff opposition from Roscommon's Sarah Boyle in the U15 Girls Singles.
Katie lost the first set before finding her groove and comfortably winning the next two games. That was to prove the high point of the day for the Leitrim squad but all of the players will have gained a good deal from the experience.
Sam Conroy & Rory McKiernan put up a tough fight against Roscommon's Patrick Farrell & James Dowling in the U11 category and they were unlucky to lose in two straight games. Eoin Grehan (Roscommon) had the edge on Oscar Mulligan in the U12 singles while Maxim Gilmartin and Eoin Mahon showed great promise to take one of the games only to be beaten in the tiebreaker in the U12 doubles.
In the U13 singles, Peter Cox lost out 15-10 15-8 to Roscommon's Mark Farrell. Roscommon's Patrick Corrigan beat Ross McShera in the U14 Singles but Ross did really well especially in the first game when he was only pipped 15-12.
Niamh Hall beat Leitrim's Sophie Kane in the U12s but Sophie will take a lot from the experience. Kym Reilly had too much in the tank for Leitrim's Ciara Conlon in the U11s while Sophie Gallogley (U13) met a very strong player in Grace Corrigan.
This is the largest field of players that Leitrim have put out in many years and perhaps that is the big achievement this year. Even so we have a number of other players in the finals next week alongside Katie Kane. Best of luck to all players who progress to the final next week.
