New youth service announced for Leitrim and North West, Harkin

New youth service set to be provided in the north west region as €1.2 Million in funding is allocated nationally

New youth service announced for Leitrim and North West, Harkin

Youth services in Leitrim and surrounding counties are set to benefit following a €1.2 million investment being allocated nationally in the budget.

The funding, which will go to the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB), will allow for the establishment of a dedicated UBU-Your Place Your Space service in the region, providing youth worker-led supports for disadvantaged young people.

UBU-Your Place Your Space currently supports 68,000 young people nationwide every year. The programme funds 249 services, delivered through 16 Education and Training Boards. Its aim is to reach marginalised, vulnerable or at-risk young people aged 10–24 and improve their personal and social development outcomes.

Speaking today, Minister Harkin said, “I am particularly delighted that Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo and Donegal are to directly benefit from this national investment in young people. Too often our rural regions are left behind, but this new UBU service will ensure that vulnerable young people across our area have access to safe spaces, trusted youth workers, and tailored supports that can make a real difference in their lives.”

“This is about reaching out to those most at risk, giving them opportunities for growth, and supporting them in developing confidence, resilience and skills. It is a strong signal that our young people here in the North West matter and will be supported.”

With the inclusion of Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB and Donegal ETB in the ten new service areas, up to 1,000 additional young people nationwide — including many in the North West — will gain access to dedicated youth services for the first time.

Minister Harkin added, “The establishment of this new service underlines the importance of balanced regional development. Our young people in Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo and Donegal deserve the same opportunities as those in larger urban centres, and today’s announcement is a step in ensuring they receive the support they need to thrive.”

The Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB and Donegal ETB will shortly issue a call for local youth organisations to apply to establish and deliver the new service. Rollout will be prioritised in areas of greatest need, as identified by the ETB.
