Carrick-on-Shannon has been chosen as a key town under the first phase of the National Town Centre First initiative.

This means a ‘Town Centre First’ vision and plan will be developed for the town, which will identify key projects and actions to be delivered to enhance Carrick-on-Shannon Town Centre.

Leitrim County Council, in conjunction with the Carrick-on-Shannon Town Team and an Integrated Design Team led by architects and urban planners Allies and Morrison Ltd, are now advancing ideas on a new masterplan for Carrick-on-Shannon town centre.

The objective is to create a town centre that functions as a viable, vibrant and attractive location for people to live, work and visit, whilst also functioning as a service, social, cultural, and recreational hub for the local community.

For the last few months, Leitrim County Council, supported by its consultant team, have been working on this masterplan framework for Carrick-on-Shannon town centre.

Stakeholders are invited to an engagement workshop where they will get the opportunity to meet those involved and review and provide feedback on some emerging priorities and ideas.

It takes place on Thursday, April 20, in The Landmark Hotel, Carrick on Shannon, from 2.30pm – 5pm.
There will be light refreshments served from 2.30pm. The workshop will begin at 3pm.

If you would like to book your place, please email carrickmasterplan@ leitrimcoco.ie and please state any dietary requirements that you may have.

Cllr Enda Stenson is urging local people to get involved and interact and have their say in relation to the Town Centre First plan which he said impacts on the people of Carrick-on-Shannon.

Elected representatives meet with consultants

Meanwhile, last Thursday morning, elected representatives in the Carrick municipal area attended an online meeting with consultants Allies and Morrison.

They shared with them the results of the pop-up consultation event held at Market Yard on February 2 where they asked the public for their views on Carrick's offering or lack of.

Cllr Finola Armstrong-McGuire said the presentation was excellent.

Walking, cycling and easy wayfinding was emphasised with the river being the jewel in the crown for Carrick, she said.

“Their overview looked at private and public owned property and suggested utilising same if agreement could be reached with owners, etc.

“Their suggestions were varied and aspirational and likely to be implemented piece by piece over many years.

“While funding opportunities arise frequently I see that this exercise gives us thought as to what we could aspire to achieving in Carrick town centre,” she said.
