Road markings on the R199, particularly around the Drumlonan Lough stretch, will be improved this year.
Cllr Róisín Kenny requested the upgrade at a meeting of Ballinamore Municipal District, highlighting the danger posed especially in foggy conditions.
Cllr Paddy O’Rourke seconded the motion noting that the absence of clear markings makes it difficult for drivers to determine the end of the carriageway.
In response, the Roads department confirmed that re-establishing the road marking is scheduled, however work is pending the return of the lining contractor to Leitrim.
Cllr Kenny also raised concerns about inadequate street lighting on the Convent Road in Ballinamore, particularly between the Island Theatre and the school.
She suggested replacing the existing bulb with LED lighting.
Cllr Ita Reynolds-Flynn supported the motion, while district engineer Darragh O’Boyle acknowledged that the lightbulb itself could be upgraded.
He added that the Active Travel department is seeking funding through the Safe Routes to School programme, which may allow for a lighting upgrade, though this is not yet confirmed.
In the interim, Mr O’Boyle said he would review the public lighting contract to see if the bulbs can be upgraded through regular maintenance.
Local authorities across the country are currently working to enhance public lighting as part of the National Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Project in coordination with Electric Skyline.
Justin Fannon informed councillors that Electric Skyline aims to complete upgrades on all 4,000 public lights in Leitrim by the end of the year.
