Tributes and memories have been shared following the passing of a Leitrim man remembered as a “gentleman” and “wonderful company.”
John Rankin of 59 McDermott Terrace, Manorhamilton, passed away peacefully in the excellent care of North West Hospice on Wednesday, February 25, surrounded by his loving family.
He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife Marian; son Daniel; daughters Andrea and Rachel; sons-in-law Sean and Simon; and his seven grandchildren, Éabha, Muireann, James, Donnacha, Réiltín, Peadar and Seoidín. He is also fondly remembered by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and a wide circle of friends.
Condolences have been paid on RIP.ie, with many recalling John’s warmth and character, and sharing cherished memories. “Great memories of growing up on McDermott Terrace, with good kind neighbours and childhood friends. John was one of those friends, may he rest in peace,” one person wrote. “I have fond memories of Johnny through our school years and he was always an obliging and kind neighbour to my late parents. When you were in his company there was never a dull moment,” said another.

I will always be grateful to have known him and to have worked alongside him,” another person recalled. “A true gentleman who had a smile for everyone. He brightened up every conversation. He will be missed by all,” said another.
Requiem Mass for John took place on Saturday, February 28, at St Clare’s Church, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
“John will always be remembered as a kind, caring and true gentleman, a great loss to you all,” another tribute stated on RIP.ie.
“He showed me how to work the petrol pumps on my first summer job. Spending a shift with him was a laugh. If laughing and smiling would make you a millionaire, then Johnny was one,” another person fondly remembered.
