A wide array of tributes have been paid across Carrick-on-Shannon and beyond, and among local groups to Angus Dunne, who passed away on Monday, September 29, in his 100th year.

Described as “one of Carrick’s true gentlemen,” Angus was a pillar of the community and deeply involved in numerous organisations.

A lifelong member of the local drama society The Breffni Players, he was a talented set designer and director. He also had a longstanding association with Carrick Rowing Club. In a tribute on Facebook, the club said Angus “was always a wise counsel and a great shoulder to lean on.”

The Breffni Players wrote that they were “deeply saddened” by his passing, remembering him as a “true gentleman.”

Angus passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. He is predeceased by his daughter Marie Therese, son-in-law Trevor, sister Patricia, and his brothers Alan and Greg.

He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife Breda; sons John and Alan; daughters Evelyn and Ailbhe; daughters-in-law Geraldine and Jeanette; son-in-law Reinhold; granddaughters Zoë, Kali, Sinead, Nicole, Jennifer and Alesha; along with his extended family, dear friends, colleagues and carers.

Reposing will take place at The Heritage Centre, Chapel of Rest, Church Lane, Carrick-on-Shannon, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm on Wednesday, October 1. His funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 2, at 12pm in St Mary’s Church, Carrick-on-Shannon.

Angus leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the locality and beyond. He was the first to introduce musicals to Carrick-on-Shannon Community School alongside Anne Maxwell, beginning with Fiddler on the Roof in 1995.

“Never asking for anything in return, he went about directing our students in his calm and mild-mannered way. We are truly grateful for the legacy he has created and left with us. Simply put, there would not have been musicals had we not had Angus,” read a tribute from Carrick-on-Shannon CS on Facebook.

Condolences are being shared on RIP.ie in his memory. One message read: “One of Carrick’s finest and true legend gone. A gentleman who greeted everyone like a friend. Angus lived a hundred years but he lived many lifetimes.”

Another remembered: “Angus was a true gent, and whenever we met, he had this trademark twinkle in his eyes. Angus will be sadly missed, his sense of humour, his creativity, his community spirit.”
