RIP: Tributes flow for Leitrim man fondly remembered as ‘a proper gentleman’

RIP: Tributes flow for Leitrim man fondly remembered as ‘a proper gentleman’

Memories and tributes continue to be paid following the peaceful passing of a Leitrim man remembered as a “lovely, helpful gentleman and neighbour.”

Hugh Donohoe, of Cluain Ard, Lisnagot, Carrick-on-Shannon, passed away on Thursday, January 22, surrounded by his loving family at North West Hospice.

Hugh was predeceased by his parents Mary and Frank, his brother Frank, and his sister-in-law Ann. He will be deeply missed by his devoted family: his wife Catherine; son David; daughters Deirdre and Síle; daughter-in-law Sandra; sons-in-law Dónal and Neville; and his adored grandchildren Róisín, Ethan, Éadaoín, Emily, Cahir and Nicole. 

He is also fondly remembered by his sisters Geraldine and Carmel, brother Peter, brother-in-law Tom, sisters-in-law Marie, Mary and Margaret, along with his nieces, nephews, extended relatives, friends and neighbours.

Following his passing, condolences shared on RIP.ie have reflected on Hugh’s life, character and working years. “I worked with Hugh for years in Linen Supply of Ireland. He was a gentleman,” one person wrote.

Another shared, “We have very fond memories of Hugh from his time providing linen supply to our Hotel in Boyle. Hugh was always obliging, friendly, efficient and a pleasure to work with. Rest in peace Hugh, you will be missed and fondly remembered.”

Others recalled his warm personality and kindness. “He was a proper gentleman, always delighted to meet and enjoy the chat,” another tribute read.

Hugh’s Mass of Christian Burial took place on Sunday, January 25, in St Mary’s Church, followed by cremation in Lakelands Crematorium.

Many also spoke of his friendly presence in the community. “A true gentleman who was a long time customer of our shop. I used to love to meet him with that chirpy smile and always a story to tell. May he now dine at our lords table in heaven,” read another condolence.

Summing up the sentiment shared by many, another message said, “He will be so badly missed by all family, and by everyone who had the pleasure to have known Hugh.”
